‘Access for all: are digital museums better?’ is an online event to mark the launch of a new Instruments of Change Manchester Digital Exhibition, showcasing historic medical objects and equipment that represent innovation, change and discovery across 200 years of healthcare, research and medical education in Manchester.
A panel of medical historians, researchers and digital engagement specialists, including the University’s Jane Gallagher, will discuss and debate virtual collections and in-person object encounters in medical museums.
The event will begin with a virtual tour of the exhibition, followed by a panel discussion of which is better – in-person object engagement or digital engagement with artefacts and stories. With questions from the audience, the group will make conclusions on the value of one over the other.
