Professor Maggie B. Gale

Professor Maggie B. Gale came to the University of Manchester as Chair in Drama in 2005. She had previously been Professor Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of Birmingham. Since arriving at UoM Maggie has been Head of Department, Director of External Relations, Deputy Head of School and Director of Research in the School of Arts Languages and Cultures from 2018-2022.  She has served on three REF panels (2001/2008/2014) and has worked extensively as a research consultant in her field, in the UK and abroad. A long-term member of the AHRC peer review college, Maggie has also acted as referee and panel member for a number of funding bodies including the ERC and the Leverhulme Trust. A founding member and chair of the UK’s research association for theatre and performance (TaPRA), Maggie is a founding editor of the Routledge Performance Digital Archive and is consultant editor for Digital Theatre +, as well as being co-editor for three research monograph series for Routledge and Manchester University Press, and of the journal Contemporary Theatre Review.

Maggie’s research is in the field of theatre and performance historiography with an emphasis on issues of gender, professional practice and labour. Her most recent monograph was funded through a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship (A Social History of British Performance Cultures 1900-1939: Citizenship, Surveillance and the Body/Routledge, 2020), and she has recently also published on methodological issues in the conceptualisation and construction of auto/biographical histories.
