Event description

In The University of Manchester’s bicentenary year, the Firs Botanical Grounds is opening its doors – inviting the community to visit the historical site and contribute to its exciting plans for the future.

A hidden oasis located in Fallowfield in what used to be Sir Joseph Whitworth's garden, the site is one of the oldest continuously running research facilities in the University and has been a centre for plant-based research and teaching for over a century. It is home to an historic living plant collection, including greenhouses and outdoor spaces.

This free event will both celebrate the history of the site and raise awareness of plans to develop it as a botanical garden for the city of Manchester, providing a hub to raise awareness of sustainability.

There will be a series of talks, tours and displays – and the opportunity to enjoy this hidden quiet space in busy south Manchester.
