mA*ths Online Programme
We’re delighted to announce The University of Manchester as the northern partner for the mA*ths Online Programme for the 2024/25 academic year.
Are you an A-level Mathematics student considering studying a maths-related degree at university?
Through this programme, you could:
- Develop the skills you need to achieve an A* in A-level Mathematics.
- Build your confidence to apply to universities that require an A* in Mathematics for your chosen subject.
This initiative runs in collaboration with Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) and Imperial College, London and is intended to support students with the academic ability to achieve A/ A* at A-Level to reach their full academic potential in their Maths studies.
The programme is targeted at pupils from communities underrepresented in Higher Education.
During the programme, successful applicants receive tailored support, including online tutoring and face-to-face masterclasses at The University of Manchester.

The Year 12 programme has four compulsory components:
- attendance at a welcome event, which includes masterclasses delivered by MEI and academics from The University of Manchester’s Department of Mathematics (January 2025);
- engagement with our two seven-week Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that support the increased understanding of the A-Level maths curriculum. This content is delivered in a variety of ways including videos, practice questions and assessments, covering a range of methods and applications (February 2025 to June 2025);
- attendance at biweekly tutorial sessions from current University students where you can gain support with understanding the MOOC and the benefits of studying Maths and Maths-related degrees in Higher Education (February 2025 to June 2025);
- attendance at the end of the programme celebration and masterclass event (June 2025).

You must meet the following requirements:
- be in Year 12 for the 2024/25 academic year;
- have a home postcode in the North West;

- have passed eight GCSES;
- have six of those GCSES graded 7 to 9, including GCSE Maths and Science (we'll ask for proof of this within the application form);
- have a belief that you're capable of achieving Grade A or A* in Maths in your final A-Level exam, especially with the additional learning provided by this programme.
A parallel programme is run by Imperial College London, learn more about the programme if you do not meet the above eligibility criteria. Please note that you can apply to only one of the programmes.
This programme is designed for pupils from communities that are underrepresented in higher education, including those:
- from a POLAR 4 Q1 postcode (see postcode checker);
- who come from a school that has an Index Multiple of Deprivation flag;
- who are a young carer (find out more about the definition of a young carer);
- who are a refugee or in the process of seeking asylum;
- who have thtree months or more experience of living in care (find out more about the definition of care experienced students);
- have parents/carers who do not possess an undergraduate degree or higher degree from the UK or abroad;
- have pupil premium or free school meals at secondary school.
