International Development
The University of Manchester has been at the forefront of development studies for over 60 years.
The Global Development Institute (GDI) continues the commitment to addressing global poverty and inequality. We’re the largest dedicated development research and teaching institute in Europe. The results of the most recent Research Excellence Framework ranked GDI first for impact ranking in Development Studies in the UK, with many of our researchers deemed to be ‘world leading’.
Within GDI, the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Doctoral College is the first of its kind to focus on postgraduate research of international development. The College enhances engagement between postgraduate researchers and GDI academic staff to encourage innovation and collaboration in research and teaching. It provides opportunities for PhD researchers to obtain bespoke support, enabling them to become the next generation of academics, leaders and policymakers.
The Global Development Institute is driven by the desire to advance social justice by conducting world-class, interdisciplinary research that achieves real impact. Research at the Global Development Institute is focussed around our research groups:
- Digital development
- Migration, refugees and asylum
- Global urban futures
- Growth and distribution
- Politics, governance and management
- Global production networks, trade and labour
- Agrarian change and political ecology
