Sociology at Manchester is one of the largest and most prestigious centres for the subject in the UK. Sociology is ranked first in the UK, based on the percentage of overall research activity that is world leading (4*), and second based on research power (REF 2014).
Sociology offers a stimulating research environment for postgraduate study. It has expertise in all areas of contemporary sociology and houses several research centres dedicated to research in specific fields. Seminars in the sociology discipline and the related research centres provide a regular forum for postgraduate students to engage with cutting-edge research.
Our research methods courses provide training in qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods and are available to all postgraduates. Sociology at Manchester is part of the North West Doctoral Training Centre (NW-DTC), which is a collaboration with the universities of Lancaster and Liverpool.
We have a good record of securing funding for PhD students and normally have two DTC awards and two internal sociology studentships to award each year.
