Apply for accommodation
Everything you need to know about applying for accommodation at Manchester, including how and when to apply.
Before applying for University accommodation, read our step-by-step guide that has all the essential information you need.
Accommodation application process
It’s essential that you read our accommodation guarantee to check if you’re eligible before applying for accommodation.
It’s important that you read the following documents before applying for a room:
- Terms and conditions of residence (Word, 822KB) - make sure you understand and are happy to accept them.
- If you’re under 18, email the accommodation team so we can find you suitable accommodation. You can also read more in our Under-18s policy (Word, 317KB).
- You can also read our application and allocation statement (Word document, 447KB) for a full breakdown of how we allocate rooms.
Where possible, we can adapt our accommodation to students with specific access needs or long-term health conditions, you can contact us to discuss your requirements in further detail.
As soon as you have an offer to study at The University of Manchester, you can apply for accommodation using our online application form.
- Register for an account using your University ID number (found on your offer letter) and a valid email address.
- Follow the steps and select your preferred halls (five in total).
- If you have physical or mental health needs that impact your accommodation requirements, you’ll be able to indicate this on the initial application form. We’ll then send you a link to a separate form to complete to provide more information about the support you need. If you’d like to discuss your options, please email medicalaccommodation@manchester.ac.uk.
Applications for 2024/25 are now open.
The accommodation guarantee deadline is 31 July 2024 for visiting and exchange students, and 31 August 2024 for other students. Applications will still be accepted after this date but will no longer meet the accommodation guarantee.
You will be required to enter five accommodation preferences on the application form. You are not guaranteed your accommodation preferences; you are only guaranteed an offer of room within a hall of residence if you meet the conditions of the accommodation guarantee.

New students
If you have an unconditional offer for a course, we’ll email you from June onwards in your year of entry to let you know which hall you’ll be living in.
If you have a conditional offer for a course, we’ll assign you a room when this becomes unconditional. For undergraduates, we receive this automatically, but if you’re a new postgraduate student, you’ll need to email us when your place becomes unconditional.
We still accept applications for students who don’t meet the criteria; these will be considered once all guaranteed students have their offers.
Current students
If you're a current student and want to apply to halls for 2024/25, you’ll need to have submitted your application by 15 February 2024.
We’re not able to allocate rooms for students that:
- have any outstanding debts with the University;
- have previously breached any University terms and conditions through their behaviour.
We allocate student accommodation once grades have been confirmed.
- you'll receive an offer from June onwards if you have an unconditional firm offer for a course.
- if you have a conditional offer for a course, we'll assign you a room when it becomes unconditional after A-level results (we automatically receive a notification of this).
- we still accept applications for students who don't meet the guarantee criteria; these will be considered once all guaranteed students have their offers.
We will email you with instructions on how to accept your offer. Once you receive your offer, you have around four days to accept it (check your email for specific deadlines).
- make sure you’re happy with everything included in the offer before you accept the room;
- accept or decline your offer before the deadline; this is usually four days, but sometimes, in late August or September, it can be shorter;
- pay the £400 Advance Licence Fee payment to secure your room;
- where possible, we try to place you in one of your five preferred halls, but this is not guaranteed;
- please be aware that if you don’t accept the offer of accommodation before the expiry date, it will be withdrawn, and you’ll lose your accommodation guarantee with The University of Manchester.
Once you have accepted the offer, you’ll need to check moving-in dates and complete an online induction.

Additional information about applying
For 2024/25 applications, you can amend your applicant until 5 August 2024. After this date, amendments cannot be accepted.
You can make changes via the online application form.
If your application is submitted after the guarantee deadline, you are no longer guaranteed an offer of accommodation. Whilst we will make every effort to find students accommodation, we cannot guarantee a place in halls and suggest looking for accommodation in the private sector while waiting for a room to become available.
The guarantee deadline is 31 July 2024 for visiting and exchange students and 31 August 2024 for other students.
Manchester Student Homes provides advice or help finding accommodation in the private sector.
Unfortunately, if you fail to accept your offer before the deadline or reject it, you will lose your accommodation offer and any guarantee of a further offer.
You can enter our appeals process if you still wish to be considered for accommodation. To do this, you must send an email to nrto.appeal@manchester.ac.uk stating your reasons for not responding to the offer made.
We will consider your appeal should any suitable vacancies become available. Any appeal for reallocation may not be successful. Therefore, we advise you to look for accommodation in the private sector while your appeal is being considered and once a decision to accept or reject it has been made.
If you are offered further accommodation, we cannot guarantee that you will be reallocated to the same room or hall of residence.
Unfortunately, due to the number of applications we receive, you are only guaranteed an offer of a room within a hall of residence, not necessarily one of your five accommodation preferences.
We are unlikely to offer you another room, and you will need to find alternative accommodation within the private sector. If you do not accept the offer of accommodation before the offer expiry date, your offer will be withdrawn, and you will lose your guarantee of accommodation.
You can request to transfer rooms from October each year. Transfers are not guaranteed and are dependent on vacancies becoming available.
