Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of Oxfam International and University alumna, marked our Foundation Day with a lecture reflecting perfectly our world-class research and activities to address global inequalities.
“I came to this university a refugee – and I went home a revolutionary,” she proudly declared.
“This is a place where we reflected and found our voices, our place, our role in our societies. This is a place where we found the confidence to go back and dream our dreams and make them come true.
“For Manchester to continue to keep sharing knowledge, giving opportunity to young people from developing countries, is just amazing. I am just so proud to be an alumna.”
Ugandan-born Winnie, BSc in Aeronautical Engineering, received an Honorary Doctorate alongside Lord David Alliance, Professor Dame Sue Bailey, Mr Anil Ruia and Sir Norman Stoller.
Foundation Day was also marked with a short film ‘We Belong’, about The University of Manchester’s commitment to international and local inclusivity and diversity, featuring our students and staff.
